Patrick Tambay reflects on the legends of the past.. there’s great sadness in simple words..
It’s in my mental and visual memory forever, the same goes for Didier Pironi’s accident in Germany and Gilles Villeneuve’s at Zolder in Belgium 1982, Ronnie Peterson’s at Monza in 1978 -who should have been my team mate at McLaren in 1979-, Patrick Depailler at Hockenheimring while testing, Roger Williamson at Zandvoort in 1973, Jo Siffert at Brands Hatch in England in 1971… so many other great guys!
These are images of accidents of my friends, my colleagues, forever registered in my memory. Before them so many had died of their passion, their love and physical dedication for what? Who has the answer? What were their motivation? How could they get back in their racing cars after knowing and seeing their friends killed and broken to pieces? What were they driven by? Glory, fame, money, excitment, the surge for adrenaline? Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt, Jo Bonnier, the list is endless until Ayrton, and let’s hope it stays that way… !
